Is Your Home In A Smoke Control Area?

Most towns and cities are located in Smoke Control Areas. To burn Wood or Coal in a stove in these locations the stove must be suitable for use in a Smoke Control Area.

When searching for an appliance which needs to comply with the clean air act look out for the Defra Approved logo or symbol, this will identify that the stove has been tested to the clean air act 1993

The Clean Air Act 1993 aims to reduce pollution from solid fuel burning appliances. It gives local authorities power to designate smoke control areas, which are mainly towns or cities. It is an offence to emit smoke in a smoke control area unless using an approved appliance “DEFRA”. An exemption is given to appliances that have been tested to the clean burn act. Without this exemption, you may only burn smokeless fuels in a solid fuel burning appliance within a Smoke Control Area. For more information please call us.
